Everyone tells me how incredibly lucky I am to be married to Taylor Hanson. In their eyes we have a perfect marriage and the perfect little family. It's too bad they don't know the whole story. If they only knew what it was really like inside the walls of our perfect house... Well, I'm going to tell you the real story about our "whirl-wind romance." All of our dirty little secrets will be revealed. The real story will probably shock you, but this is how it all began...
I was new to Tulsa when I met Taylor Hanson. I had just moved there after graduating from high school and only turned 18 a few months earlier. The reason I moved to Tulsa was to get myself settled before I started college in the fall. I met him one random summer night at an extremely popular club.
Audrey Clemence was a girl who lived in the same apartment complex as me. We met a few days after I’d moved in, and almost immediately became friends. I was trying to carry in my groceries and get the heavy door to my apartment open simultaneously, and I was doing a poor job. She helped me out by holding the door open for me.
Audrey was completely awesome – smart and pretty and very friendly. She loved to party and have fun, which was something I knew very little about due to my parents rarely allowing me to go to many parties when I lived at home. When I told Audrey this, she told me she was just the person to learn from.
After living in Tulsa for only a few weeks, Audrey convinced me to go with her to her favorite club. I figured I might be able to make a few friends. I didn't want to start college in the fall and be the only girl without friends. I guess that sounds kind of immature, but I honestly cared about what other people thought of me. I was just that sort of a person. I guess you could say I was insecure. All throughout high school, I was one of those girls who always looked for approval from someone else. So I hoped by meeting people I would be more confident about myself when I started my classes. There was no time like the present to start looking for friends to help boost my confidence level.
Once we arrived at the club, Audrey dragged me out to the dance floor with her other friends and we just sort of just danced in a little circle. I was having so much fun. I didn't even think about what everyone else was doing or thought. Having fun was all that mattered that night. Then Audrey introduced me to Taylor Hanson. I guess introduce isn't exactly the right word because I knew he was before she told me.
What teenage girl hadn’t heard of Hanson? Isaac – the curly haired guitarist. Taylor – the soulful singer and keyboardist. Zac – the wild, sarcastic drummer. I would have had to live in a cave to not know who he was. All the girls I went to middle school with had a crush on one of the Hanson brothers.
I had seen Taylor across the room when he walked in the door and my mind just sort of froze. When I was younger I had been a huge Hanson fan and my sights had always been set on Taylor. I had thought Taylor was just the hottest thing in the world. Of course I never would have admitted to anyone at that moment I still thought he was. When he walked over to Audrey and me, I didn't know what to do.
Then Audrey said, "Hey, Tayles, baby, this is my friend, Eden MacCan. She lives in the apartment above mine. Eden, this is Taylor Hanson."
I wanted to scream ‘I know! I know who you are! I used to think I was in love with you!’ but I didn't. I just smiled and said, just above a whisper, "Hey."
"Nice to meet you," Taylor replied with a charming smile as he gulped back a huge drink of beer.
It seemed like everyone around me was drinking an alcoholic beverage. I was probably the only underage person in the building. Audrey and Taylor were both 21, and I was guessing their friends were probably 21 as well. After awhile I decided to sit down for a little bit. I had never danced so much in my life and my feet were killing me.
I watched as everyone around me continued to dance and have a good time before I looked down at my aching feet. I was thinking about how I was never going to wear the shoes I had on ever again when Taylor walked over to me and said, "Hey, wanna dance?"
"Sure," I smiled. I could feel my cheeks burning as I stood up and took his hand, letting him lead me out onto the dance floor. I was flattered he asked me, of all people, to dance. There were plenty of girls who were much prettier than me he could have asked.
While we were dancing, I realized Taylor had already had a lot to drink. I could smell the alcohol on his hot breath, so I wasn't sure if he was just attracted to me through an alcohol induced haze, or if he was really attracted to me. We danced for a little while, and before Audrey and I left I gave Taylor my number, but figured he would probably never call. I figured I stood no chance. I was just a girl he had danced with while he was drunk, and probably wouldn’t even remember me the next day.
After a few weeks of hoping, I decided Taylor had probably forgotten about me, so naturally I was surprised when he actually called me a few days later.
"Hey, is Eden around?" he asked.
"Um, this is she," I replied as I was cleaning up the living room, "Who's this?"
"Oh, it's Taylor. You've forgotten me already?" he replied. I could tell he was grinning.
I immediately stopped what I was doing and just sort of froze. "No, of course not," I stuttered. "So, how are you?"
"I'm great," he replied in his amazingly charming voice. "How about you?"
"I'm good," I replied. "I suppose."
"I'm not catching you at a bad time, am I?" he asked.
"Oh, no!" I replied quickly. "I was just cleaning the apartment."
"Oh, I see," Taylor said. "So, I was calling to see if you wanted to do something tonight."
"Tonight?" I asked with surprise.
"Is that too short of notice?" he asked.
"No, not at all," I said quickly. "That's fine. Tonight's great. I really didn’t feel like cleaning anyway."
"Okay," he said with a light laugh. "I'll be by around seven, okay?"
"Sounds great," I agreed. “Do you know where my apartment’s at?”
“The one right above Audrey’s, right?”
“Yep, that’s it,” I smiled. After I hung up the phone and collapsed on the couch with a sigh. He hadn’t been too drunk to remember me after all!
I couldn't believe I actually had a date with Taylor Hanson. It seemed so unreal. I was just a girl from a small suburban town in California. Stuff like this didn't happen to me. It was like a fairytale.
I guess I should have known right then it was too good to be true. Only later did I learn it was far from a fairy tale. After that night, my life would never be anywhere near the same.
