Plot Synopsis
Cady Jacoby has lived her life longing to explore the world outside the overprotective shell her mother has created for her. When she finally finds the courage to break away, she takes the first bus she can get and leaves town. When she arrives in Los Angeles, she realizes just how little she knows about the world outside the one her mother showed her. When she and Zac Hanson cross paths, they find an instant connection, and through Zac, Cady begins to find her way, but she quickly realizes that maybe her mother had good reason to protect her.
Shelter, A History
If you've been around the Hanfic scene for a while, it's very possible you might remember this story from when it was originally posted by in 2003. The original plotline was the brainchild of myself and a girl named Holly. We just happened to cross paths somehow and started talking about a collaboration. We went into the story with very little planned, and we wrote about thirteen chapters, trading off with Holly writing the original character Happy and myslelf writing for Zac.
Eventually, Holly decided to step away from the project due to lack of time and interest in other fandoms. At first I planned to continue with the story, and a couple of friends - Nikki and Stephanie - offered to step in and write Happy's point of voice. This worked through a couple of chapters, but the project got put on the back burner with the intentions of coming back to it and starting over from the beginning to fill in some of the gaps. At one point, I even talked to Nikki (author of Comfort Zone) about letting her rewrite the story for NaNoWriMo, but the plan never came to fruition.
Then right before NaNoWriMo 2009 began I happened upon the old files and thought about finally doing the rewrite I'd always planned, but I had another idea in might already. However, two days into NaNoWriMo, I found myself already starting to flounder due to lack of preparation for the other story. I mentioned the idea of rewriting to Nikki, who encouraged me to do so, and so I put my original NaNoWriMo story to the side and pulled up the original draft of Shelter and began planning and started writing.
This has always been a story that has stuck with me. I really enjoyed it while I was working on it and hated the idea of never seeing it finished, but with Nikki's encouragement, I'm working on completing the story and bringing a plot that I always held dear to me to life. While I plan to hold true to many of the original plot points, I have revamped the story and changed several of the details to make it more conducive and realistic. However, the story is set in May 2009 but the ages of the Hanson guys have been pushed back two years, making Zac 21, Taylor 24, and Isaac 26.
